Los Angeles, Ca. (June 22, 2026) – Latinos and Indigenous immigrant parents who are members of the nonprofit organization Our Voice Communities for Quality Education are saddened by news of Alberto Carvalho’s resignation as superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second largest school district in the country.
While saddened by the announcement, Our Voice thanks Mr. Carvalho for his years of service and commitment to uplifting the voices of immigrant families and vulnerable student populations during his time at LAUSD. Moving forward, Our Voice hopes that the vital work to engage immigrant families in LAUSD decision-making will continue.
Latinos comprise 74% of the district’s families, yet their voices in conversations around policy and funding often went unheard. Mr. Carvalho changed this by inviting families to meet with him directly and build a partnership. As the district’s leader, Mr. Carvalho quickly became an important advocate for immigrant families, often sharing his own story as an undocumented youth. He protected learning conditions for children, while reassuring parents and remaining outspoken in the face of callous immigration enforcement during a terrifying moment in our country’s history for immigrants. In addition, Our Voice celebrates the academic gains made by vulnerable student populations under his tenure, which showed that the district was finally making strides for student achievement.
Our Voice also recognizes the important work undertaken and that lies ahead for Acting Superintendent Andres Chait during this transition. Superintendent Chait has shown interest in sustaining conversations and collaboration with families, and Our Voice is grateful.
While the district may launch a national search for its next superintendent, Our Voice hopes and trusts that it will prioritize leadership that can build upon Mr. Carvalho’s close relationship with immigrant families and preserve his willingness to listen directly to immigrant parents. As the national climate grows more hostile for immigrant communities, Our Voice remains hopeful that LAUSD will continue working closely with immigrant parents to support students, protect families, and preserve the progress the district has made. The voices of immigrant families, their safety, and their children’s academic progress must remain at the forefront of the district’s next chapter.
