The AAPILC Celebrates Larry Itliong Day

SACRAMENTO, CA — The Asian American Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus (AAPILC) extends its warmest appreciation and commendation to Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis and Governor Gavin Newsom for proclaiming Larry Itliong Day in the State of California. This significant proclamation, announced on October 25, 2023, serves as a testament to the enduring legacy and profound contributions of the late labor leader, Modesto “Larry” Dulay Itliong, who played a pivotal role in shaping the labor rights movement in the United States.

Larry Itliong, an iconic Filipino-American activist, is celebrated for his tireless efforts in advocating for the rights of farmworkers. In 1956, he founded the Filipino Farm Labor Union in Stockton, California, as a response to the deplorable working conditions faced by Filipino laborers. His dedication and leadership culminated in the historic Delano grape strike in 1965, a momentous labor action that reshaped the landscape of workers’ rights in America.

The proclamation of Larry Itliong Day reaffirms the State of California’s commitment to recognizing the profound impact of Filipino-Americans, who have played an integral role in the state’s history, growth, and development. This gesture honors the memory of Larry Itliong and stands as a symbol of gratitude for his unwavering pursuit of justice and equality.

The AAPILC acknowledges the role of Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis in embracing the history and contributions of Filipino-Americans and ensuring that their voices continue to be heard. The Caucus believes that the recognition of Larry Itliong Day contributes to the broader narrative of California’s cultural and historical heritage.

In conjunction with Larry Itliong Day, the AAPILC encourages Californians to reflect upon the sacrifices and triumphs of Larry Itliong, whose legacy has left an indelible mark on the labor rights movement and continues to inspire advocates for social justice. The Caucus stands in solidarity with the Filipino-American community and all Californians in commemorating Larry Itliong Day.
